Best Technical

It's hard to get all aspects of a game put together in a weekend, so this category is here to award those that got the technical bits in order. The rules challenged the participants to make heavy use of random content that compensated in real time for the player's skill level.

  1. LightRacer

    By Mark Oates

    Game Background

screenshot To win, race around each of the six randomly generated tracks before reaching critical damage. Each section has colored lights that indicate what will happen if you veer off course. It's usually bad to go off course, but a green section will give you extra health.

    Our Take

If you're a fan of this style of graphics, you'll appreciate how well it's implemented. The rotating and scaling all responds naturally to your controls. The course is put together from random segments, and if one causes you too much grief, it will generously be disabled on your next attempt.

  2. SpeedHack 2011

    By Ben Davis

    Game Background

screenshot If you've never participated in a SpeedHack before, just play this game to figure out what it's like! You roll with the terrain, trying to collect the components required to make a complete game. If you hit a bug you'll be sent flying, wasting valuable time that the others will no doubt be using to leave you in the dust.

    Our Take

As with LightRacer, the graphical style is different from the traditional 2D SpeedHack game. Reading the various status updates (full of SpeedHacker excuses) is reason enough to play this game.

  3. Blocky Rhythm

    Dario ff

    Game Background

screenshot Basically you're a little blue guy who likes to smash colored boxes. Each block you destroy has the potential of starting a chain reaction of mass chaos. Or something like that. In addition to the live action game, there is also a puzzle mode where you must figure out exactly which boxes to smash in order to clear the level in the minimum amount of moves.

    Our Take

You've got to give extra credit to a game that features random hats, right? The whole game is very much randomly generated (one of the rules) and also gets easier if you are bad at the game (another of the rules).

Honorable mention: Green Grappler, Allegro Bubbles, Tic Tac Toe, LOVEBEAM
