Rule-O-Matic

Results

Best Overall

This category is a showcase of the games that best captured the spirit of the rules and were still fun to play! That can be quite a challenge, but here are the games that had it all.

  1. Green Grappler

    By Team Darkbits

    Game Background

screenshot Armed with just a grappling hook, you face the daunting task of ridding each level of its evil nuclear power. Dr. Green gives you a bit of advice, and from there you have to clear each of the levels in any order you like. The hook serves as both a weapon and a mode of transportation, and you couldn't save the world without it.

    Our Take

The game is very well put together and does a good job of implementing the rules, so it's no big surprise that it was voted the favorite. It is much more complete than the average SpeedHack game with multiple levels of varying complexity and design to go along with its clean presentation.

  2. Blocky Rhythm

    By Dario ff

    Game Background

screenshot Basically you're a little blue guy who likes to smash colored boxes. Each block you destroy has the potential of starting a chain reaction of mass chaos. Or something like that. In addition to the live action game, there is also a puzzle mode where you must figure out exactly which boxes to smash in order to clear the level in the minimum amount of moves.

    Our Take

At first glance, it might look a bit like Tetris Attack, but it's really quite different as you control a character directly to move boxes around. To mix things up, the environment neatly changes during the course of the game. It does a great job mixing all of the competition's rules together in a coherent package.

  3. LightRacer

    By Mark Oates

    Game Background

screenshot To win, race around each of the six randomly generated tracks before reaching critical damage. Each section has colored lights that indicate what will happen if you veer off course. It's usually bad to go off course, but a green section will give you extra health.

    Our Take

If you're a sissy and use the brakes, it's hard to lose. But this is a racing game, so you won't do that. The core mechanics are good, and it's got a SNES Mode-7 sort of feel to it, but unfortunately it lacks a bit of excitement to push it to the top.

Honorable mention: SpeedHack 2011, Allegro Bubbles, Hungry Hare, Red Elephants
